Adding star ratings to your Google Ads can catch the attention of potential customers, and showcase the products you’re providing.

Star ratings will show up on the Product Listing Ad (PLA) on the Google Shopping carousel, highlighting to customers that your product is worth their money.

How to add star ratings

Adding star ratings to your ads is fairly simple. You can add ratings through the Google Ads’ ad extension called “Seller ratings”. The extension is not directly linked to your Google Ads and is instead tied to a specific domain. Google then pulls pre-existing reviews from your domain to include in the star ratings.

Google has three prerequisites to displaying ratings on Google Ads:

  1. Retailers must have at least 100 reviews and ratings from users over the past 12 months for each domain/country where the ad is being displayed
  2. Your overall rating must be at least 3.5 out of 5
  3. Google and/or its partners must have completed an evaluation of your site.

If you meet these criteria, you’ll be able to set up star ratings for your Google Ads.

Displaying star ratings on Google Shopping also has three prerequisites, although they are a little less strict:

  1. Retailers must have collected at least 50 reviews across their product feed
  2. Shops must share all reviews with Google including low ratings
  3. You must send Google full review feeds at least once a month, which can be automated through the use of Google-certified reviews providers such as Trusted Shops or Feedback Company.

The benefits of star ratings on Google Ads

Displaying star ratings gives your business a chance to prove yourself to potential customers, and increase the reputation of your brand. Ratings can be a hugely influential factor when it comes to a consumer making a purchase, with 79% of shoppers saying that they trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.

As star ratings are based on trusted customer reviews, they are a true reflection of your business and the products/services you offer. This will help to inform consumers and show them that you’re already making people happy with your offerings.

Star ratings can improve your click-through rate (CTR): If you have good ratings and reviews for your products, this can make your ad more attractive to consumers, so the chance of them clicking on your ad is higher. A higher CTR can lead to more conversions, making them a great marketing strategy.

Star ratings will also show up on Google Maps, heightening your visibility.
